Abstract

Background: Dental disease is widespread among various groups especially in children and adolescences. There were many risk factors lead to dental caries such as dental plaque, poor oral hygiene and increase consumption of carbohydrate.
Objectives: To measure the prevalence of dental caries in adolescents patient and this knowledge is the key for controlling and prevention of dental caries among adolescents.
Materials and Methods: In the present study, adolescent patients of both genders 69 male and 71 females include of approximately 140 adolescents in age between 12–16 years, adolescent patients were examined in dental clinics of University of Babylon, Dentistry College. The indices used for examination of dental caries is the dental caries index ICDAS and for oral hygiene use is Plaque index and Gingival index of PDI by Ramfjord.
Results: In the present study found high scores of dental caries among adolescences of both genders. There was a relation between gender, poor oral hygiene and tooth decay. Also, examination of oral hygiene, plaque index mean was 0.64 for females and 0.7 for males and gingival index mean was 0.46 for males and 0.29 for females. The result explains the plaque and gingival disease high in male than female and adolescences males were high scores than females.
Conclusion: Dental caries rates being higher in male than female adolescents because dietary habits establishment of a cariogenic environment and less care about oral hygiene in male than female adolescents.
