Abstract

Background: Human zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein (AZGP1) had concerned rising interest due to its possible connection to obesity-relation metabolic defects. Bariatric surgery is regarded as one of the most effective therapeutic approaches for severe obesity.
Material and Methods: The study enrolled 180 participants who were divided into three groups. The first group included 60 individuals with severe obesity, whereas the second group comprised the same 60 patients reassessed four months after bariatric surgery. The third group consisted of 60 apparently healthy individuals who served as the control group. Venous blood samples were obtained from all participants to evaluate biochemical parameters and the anti-inflammatory marker AZGP1, which is associated with obesity-related metabolic alterations. The investigated parameters included complete blood count, lipid profile, and insulin resistance markers.
Results: A significant decrease in serum AZGP1 levels was observed in obese individuals compared with the healthy control group. Four months after bariatric surgery, AZGP1 levels increased significantly, suggesting an improvement in obesity-associated inflammatory status. Furthermore, bariatric surgery resulted in significant improvements in metabolic and biochemical parameters, including complete blood count indices, lipid profiles, and insulin resistance markers, indicating better metabolic regulation and a reduced risk of cardiovascular complications.
Conclusion: Obesity showed much lower levels of AZGP1, indicating its potential role in metabolic disruptions and obesity-related inflammation. AZGP1 levels increased gradually and significantly during a four-month period after bariatric surgery. Concomitantly, there were significant improvements in metabolic and biochemical markers. The findings indicate that AZGP1 could be a helpful indicator for assessing metabolic recovery and anti-inflammatory modifications.
